Singer Britney Spears was finally granted the right to choose her own lawyer after 13 years of being in a court-ordered conservatorship that is run by her father James Spears against her will, reports KTTV.
Judge Brenda Penny granted the 39-year-old’s request in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Spears repeatedly asked Penny to remove her father from the conservatorship immediately and have him investigated for “abuse,” but Penny refused to do so.
Spears’ prior court-appointed lawyer, Samuel Ingham III, resigned after horrific publicity from Spears’ June court appearance, notes The Wall Street Journal.
Spears’ chosen attorney Mathew Rosengart has promised to remove her father as her conservator. However, Spears will have to pay for her father’s lawyers when they fight Rosengart in court.
