Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA), who chosen by Republicans to be the 56th Speaker of the House, told a physician in May 2022 that women have abortions seconds before birth, which the physician correctly denied, noted Esquire:
Johnson: Do you support the right of a woman who is just seconds away from birthing a healthy child to have an abortion?
Robinson: I think that the question you’re asking does not realistically reflect abortion care —
Johnson: In that scenario, would you support her right to abort that child?
Robinson: I won’t entertain theoretical —
Johnson: It’s not a theoretical, ma’am. You are a medical doctor.
Robinson: I am a medical doctor, that has never happened —
Johnson: Never happened in your practice, ma’am. But it happens.
Rep. Johnson also tried to help overturn the 2020 presidential election results, notes The Associated Press:
[Rep. Johnson] took the lead in filing a brief in a lawsuit that sought to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential election win. That claim, widely panned by legal scholars of all ideologies, was quickly thrown out by the U.S. Supreme Court.
After the 2020 election, Johnson also echoed some of the wilder conspiracy theories pushed by then-President Donald Trump to explain away his loss. Then Johnson voted against certifying Biden’s win even after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.
Rep. Johnson also falsely claimed that passages from II Timothy in the Bible were specifically addressed to anti-abortion activists, even though abortion is never mentioned once in the Bible.
