California GOP gubernatorial candidate Larry Elder told right wing podcast host Candace Owens on July 18 that an argument could be made for reparations of slave owners whose legal “property” was taken from them following the end of the Civil War:
When people talk about reparations, do they really want to have that conversation? Like it or not, slavery was legal. Their legal property was taken away from them after the Civil War, so you could make an argument that the people that are owed reparations are not only just Black people but also the people whose “property’”was taken away after the end of the Civil War.
The podcast is produced by Prager University, which is not a real university and licenses the name from right wing radio host Dennis Prager.
During the conversation, Owens falsely claimed the United States was “one of the first countries that banned the slave trade,” but PolitiFact notes that U.S. was one of the last.
