Shelley Luther, a former school teacher who is running as a Republican candidate for Congress, complained to her supporters in Bonham, Texas, on Feb. 5 that students cannot mock transgender kids in the “Bible belt,” reports the Houston Chronicle:
I am not comfortable with the transgenders. The kids that they brought in my classroom, when they said that this kid is transgendering into a different sex, that I couldn’t have kids laugh at them … like, other kids got in trouble for having transgender kids in my class.
Now a hairdresser, Luther was briefly jailed in 2020 for defying a pandemic lockdown order. Luther went after transgender children in Texas classrooms because she supports “school choice.”
Equality Texas, which advocates for the rights of gay and transgender Texans, CEO Ricardo Martinez: Pushed back:
Lamenting not being able to allow students to laugh at, bully and harass transgender kids isn’t leadership, it’s cruelty plain and simple. All children in Texas are guaranteed a public education under the constitution, deserve privacy and the ability to learn in a safe environment.
